Using Expressable's Portal for Speech or Occupational Therapy Practice at Home
Leanne Sherred, M.S., CCC-SLPAt Expressable, we know that regular practice is key to making progress in speech and occupational therapy. That’s why we created the Expressable portal--to help make practice at home easier, more doable, and even more effective.
Whether you're helping your child say new sounds, supporting their fine motor skills, or building your own communication skills, consistent practice between sessions leads to faster progress. But let’s face it: Life gets busy. And getting kids, or even ourselves, to stick with practice isn’t always easy.
That’s where the Expressable portal comes in. It gives you all the tools you need to stay on track between sessions. From short videos and tips to interactive lessons and therapist feedback, everything is in one simple, easy-to-access place.
Let’s walk through how to use Expressable’s portal for therapy practice at home so you or your child can reach your goals even sooner.
Learn and review therapy strategies with Learning Paths
Inside the portal, you’ll find Learning Paths, which are step-by-step lessons created by Expressable speech and occupational therapists. These interactive modules explain the exact strategies covered in your sessions, so you can review them anytime you like.
Each Learning Path includes:
Easy-to-follow instructions
Demonstration videos
Helpful tips and real-life examples
A quick quiz to check your understanding
For example, if your child is working on saying the /s/ sound, you might watch a short video that shows how to shape the sound with your speech therapist's guidance. Or if you're helping your child with emotional regulation, the Learning Path might demonstrate different deep breathing exercises to try.

These lessons aren’t just for kids. They’re incredibly helpful for adults, too. Let’s say you’re an adult working on clear articulation after a stroke or practicing strategies for voice therapy. Your Learning Path might include a video demonstrating resonance techniques, along with pacing strategies to help you slow your rate of speech. You can watch and follow along at your own pace, reinforcing what you learned in your last session.

Get startedPractice at home with fun, flexible activities
Speech or occupational therapy doesn’t stop when the session ends. That’s why your therapist will assign weekly home practice activities through the portal. These might include:
Printable games or worksheets
Play-based ideas to try with your child
Simple speech drills you can do in the car or at the dinner table
Activities you can do during your daily routines, like commuting or getting dressed for the day
These activities are short, effective, and easy to weave into your daily life. Plus, once you’ve tried them out, you can submit your feedback right through the portal. Your therapist will use that information to adjust your goals and plan for your next session.
Here’s an expert tip: Keep practice low-pressure and positive. A few minutes a day can make a big difference!

Why home practice matters (and works!)
If your child is in speech or occupational therapy, your support at home is one of the most important parts of their progress. Research shows that when parents practice therapy strategies throughout the week, children make faster and more lasting improvements.
One study on “parent-implemented intervention” in speech therapy found that:
Parents could successfully learn and apply speech therapy strategies.
Children improved their verbal and nonverbal communication as a result.
Parents were just as effective as therapists in helping their children practice.
Another study focused on virtual OT for autistic children. This research showed that after being coached on strategies during sessions, parents felt better able to support their child at home in skills like emotional regulation, potty training, eating, or sleeping, leading to better results.
These are powerful findings! At Expressable, we believe in empowering caregivers to be active partners in therapy. Our portal helps make that happen, giving you tools and support that are research-backed and easy to use.
